A look at Caroline Wozniacki’s performance in 2010

Born on 11 July 1990, Caroline Wozniacki is a Danish professional player who recently upset the reigning World no.1 Serena Williams to grab the top ranking position. Not having won a single Grand Slam this year, it is a surprise
to experts and critics out there as to how she sits at the top position in the WTA rankings.
Start of the year saw her playing at an exhibition tournament in Hong Kong where she lost the singles match, but won the mixed doubles paired alongside Swede Stefan Edberg. Her first WTA Tournament of the year was the 2010 Medibank
International played in Sydney in January. In the opening round she lost to the Chinese professional, Li Na. End of January saw the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open; she was seeded 4 in the tournament, which also happened to be her first ever
top eight seed for a Grand Slam. In the 4th round she was pitted against Na again where she lost the match in straight sets. She was ranked 3rd in world rankings when she exited the tournament.
Wozniacki’s first win of the year came to her at Point Verda Beach when she defeated the Belarusian Olga Govortsova in the final with a match score of 6-2, 7-5. In April, she entered the Family Circle Cup held in South Carolina,
United States. However, due to a serious injury which she suffered in the semi finals she was forced to retire. She was playing the Russian Vera Zvonareva.
Despite her injury she decided to compete in Stuttgart, Rome, Madrid, and Warsaw during the clay court season. However since the injury was serious she suffered losses in the early rounds. Even then she was seeded 3rd at
the French Open in May-June. She sailed through the tournament into the fourth round where she met the Italian Flavia Pennetta. The first hurdle in an otherwise smooth running; she played the match for almost three hours and ultimately defeated the Italian
by 7-5, 4-7, 6-2. She met the eventual champion Francesca Schiavone in the quarterfinals and after suffering defeat at her hands, exited the tournament. The match score was 6-3, 6-2.
This June, she played her first grass tournament of the year at the AEGON International of which she was the defending champion. Even though she lost early at this event she was seeded 3rd in the Wimbledon Championship;
her third top eight seed of the year. She played well and won all her matches all the way to the fourth round where she was defeated by Czech Petra Kvitova.
Being Denmark’s favourite she was seeded 1st in the 2010 e-Boks Danish Open. She defeated the Czech Klara Zakopalova in the finals to grab a second title in the year.
She entered the Rogers Cup 2010 as the 2nd seed in Montreal in August and defeated Vera to win the third singles title. She was seeded 1st in the Pilot Pen Tennis 2010 in New Haven and won the title by defeating
the Russian Nadia Petrova. The two title wins on hard court won her the top seed in the U.S. Open. She sailed into the fourth round with only a three game loss and defeated the Russian legend Maria Sharapova. However she lost to Vera in the semi finals.
The last title won by the Dane was at the Shanghai Masters in Beijing where she upset Serena for the top ranking when she defeated Petra, who had earlier defeated her in Wimbledon. She faced Vera in the final once more however
this time she gave an excellent performance and won the title by a match score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Having won six titles this year none of which were the Grand Slams, the Dane professional surprisingly ranks No.1 in the WTA rankings.
