Born on 17 June 1985 in the city of Paramytha, Marcos Baghdatis is a professional tennis player from Cyprus. The 25-year-old Cypriot was a runner-up at the hard court Australian Open tennis tournament and a semi-finalist at the grass court Grand Slam championship back in 2006. He achieved his career high ranking of world number eight back in 2006 during the month of August. Marcos is currently ranked number ten in the world by the Association of tennis professionals.
As far as this year is concerned, Marcos Baghdatis played at the Brisbane International tennis tournament as his very first competition of the season. He defeated Mardy Fish in his opening round match in a total of two sets. However, the Cypriot was edged out in the second round of the competition by Tomas Berdych in a two-setter clash. The final match score was 0–6, 1–6.
He next competed at the Australian Open tennis tournament where Marcos defeated his Italian opponent Paolo Lorenzi in his opening round match in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6–2, 6–4, and 6–4. The right-handed Cypriot couldn’t pass the third round of the competition, as he was dismissed by Lleyton Hewitt in a five-setter epic clash in the end.
His next participation was at the 2010 ABN AMRO World Tennis championship held in Rotterdam, Netherlands. There he thrashed out James Blake in a comprehensive 6–4, 6–2 win in the first round of the competition. However, he was once again knocked down in his second round clash at the hands of Nikolay Davydenko in a total of two sets. The final match score was 3–6, 2–6.
At the 2010 BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament, Marcos participated as seeded twenty-seven to win the title. He defeated Arnaud Clement in his opening match of the competition in a total of two sets. The final match score was 7–6(7), 6–1. In his next round match, the Cypriot captured his biggest ever victory after downing the current second-ranked Roger Federer in a three-setter clash. The final match score was 5–7, 7–5, 7–6. However, the eighteen-ranked tennis ace was beaten in the next round by Tommy Robredo in a total of three sets. The final match score was 5–7, 6–0, 4–6.
At the clay court French Open tennis tournament 2010, Marcos Baghdatis was toppled by the Scottish tennis player Andy Murray in the third round of the competition in a total of four sets. The final match score was 2–6, 3–6, 6–0, 2–6.
Baghdatis couldn’t play well at the grass court Grand Slam championship as well as he was defeated in the first round of the competition by Lukas Lacko in straight sets at the All England Club.

The Cypriot then shocked everyone with a 7–5, 6–4 third round victory over Tomas Berdych. In the quarterfinal round of the competition, the professional tennis ace from Cyprus surpassed the world number one Rafael Nadal after six consecutive defeats against the Spaniard in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6–4, 4–6, 6–4.
