A look at Marcos Baghdatis performance in 2010
Born on 17 June 1985 in the city of Limassol, Marcos Baghdatis is a professional tennis player from Cyprus. The 25-year-old Marcos was the runner-up at the Australian Open back in 2006 as well as a semi-finalist at Wimbledon in the same year. He is currently
ranked number nineteen in the world by the Association of tennis professionals.
As far as his performance in 2010 is concerned, the right hander Cypriot started the season by taking part in the Brisbane International event which serves as a warm up to the Australian Open in Melbourne. He got the better of Mardy Fish in the opening round
in two sets. The final match score was 7–5, 7–5. The Cypriot, however, was bundled out in the next round by Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in straight sets with a score line of 0–6, 1–6.
At the Australian Open, Marcos thrashed out his Italian foe, Paolo Lorenzi in the first round in three sets to meet David Ferrer in the next round. He successfully defeated Ferrer in an epic five sets. The final match score was 4–6, 3–6, 7–6, 6–3, and 6–1.
The right hander in his next round clash, however, was retired injured after playing fifty four minutes of the match against Lleyton Hewitt while trailing at 0–6, 2–4. As a result of his third round exit at the year’s first major, his ranking dropped down
to number thirty six in the world.
He next contested at the 2010 ABN AMRO World Tennis championship, where the Cypriot got the better of James Blake from the United States of America in two sets just to fall down at the hands of Nikolay Davydenko in the next round in straight sets. The final
match score was 3–6, 2–6
At the 2010 BNP Paribas Open, held in Indian Wells, Marcos was seeded number twenty seven to win the title. After receiving an opening round bye, he ousted Arnaud Clement in the second round in straight sets. The score line was 7–6(7), 6–1. In the third
round battle, the 25-year-old Marcos played the match of his life to record his career best victory by thrashing out the top seed Swiss tennis maestro, Roger Federer in three sets. The final match score was 5–7, 7–5, 7–6(4). He prevented a total of five match
points on his way to victory. However, in the next round Marcos was hammered down by Tommy Robredo in a three-setter clash.
The Limassol resident at the clay court French Open in Roland Garros couldn’t go beyond the third round as he was sent packing by the number one Brit, Andy Murray in four sets. The final match score was 2–6, 3–6, 6–0, 2–6.
Baghdatis, next suffered another blow when he was bundled out of the grass court Grand Slam tournament in his opening round clash at the hands of Lukas Lacko in straight sets at the All England Club.
However, the 1.83 meters tall tennis star once again returned to perform at the 2010 Farmers Classic tennis competition in Loss Angeles where he advanced into the quarter final before losing to Janko Tipsarevic on the very first occasion in his career.
At the 2010 Pilot Pen tennis tournament, world number nineteen Marcos toppled Igor Andreev on the first occasion in two sets and then rallied to bounce back from a set down to get past Juan Ignacio Chela 1–6, 6–3, 6–2 to make his way into the final eight.
In the quarters, Marcos was given a beating by the ultimate winner, Sergiy Stakhovsky in three sets. The score line was 7–5, 1–6, 6–7(4).
Arriving at the Flushing Meadows in the city of New York, the professional tennis ace from Cyprus, Marcos Baghdatis surprisingly lost his opening round match in five sets at the hands of Arnaud Clement. The final match score was 3–6, 6–2, 6–1, 4–6, 5–7.
