A look at Minnesota Vikings’ failure in last NFL season (Part III)
Continued from part II...
At Chicago
After getting their first win of the season, Vikings were looking confident, but when they travelled to play against the Chicago Bears, misery was awaiting them.
Bears started the game dominantly and scored two touchdowns in the first quarter without allowing Vikings to make any scoring move. Not only that, they also sacked Vikings’ quarterback, Donovan McNabb, in his own end zone to earn two safety points.
Vikings got a field goal in the second quarter, but Bears scored a touchdown and a field goal in the same quarter to stun the Vikings.
Vikings got their only touchdown of the game in the third quarter in which Bears scored a field goal and a touchdown.
Bears added another field goal in the final period and won the game, 39-10.
Against Green Bay Packers
After once again tasting the defeat, Vikings did not have something to cheer themselves. The matters got worse when the then defending Super Bowl champions, Green Bay Packers, who had not lost a single game in the season, visited Minnesota.
Unexpectedly, Vikings put up a great competition against Packers, but the effort was not enough to counter Packers’ exploding offence.
Both teams scored a touchdown each in the first quarter and Vikings were able to go ahead Packers in the second quarter in which Vikings got 10 points while Green Bay got only six.
However, Packers dominated the third quarter of the game and scored two touchdowns and two field goals without conceding any point.
Vikings got 10 points in the final quarter, but they still were not able to overcome the deficit. The final score, 33-27, settled in favour of Packers.
At Carolina
After playing seven games, Vikings had only won one and were on a two-game losing streak when they travelled to play against the Carolina Panthers.
Vikings started well and scored a touchdown in the first quarter, but Panthers hit back in the second quarter by scoring two touchdowns while giving away one.
Both teams got a touchdown each in the third quarter after which the score was tied, 21-21.
Vikings got a field goal in the final quarter without conceding any point and got their second victory of the season.
The final score settled at 24-21.
At Green Bay
After once again ending the slump, Vikings got a bye week, but they had a tough encounter ahead as they travelled to play against the Green Bay Packers.
Packers proved why they were the defending champions and why they had not lost any game in the season by crushing Vikings badly.
Packers got two touchdowns in the first quarter and a field goal in the second. They entered the halftime with a 17-point lead as Vikings were yet to score.
In the third quarter, Packers did not lose their rhythm and got two more touchdowns. However, Vikings also got their first scoring move of the game in that quarter as they scored a touchdown.
That scoring move from Vikings did not deter Packers’ spirits and they added two more touchdowns in the final quarter to win the game. The final score settled at 45-7.
Vikings’ quarterback, Christian Ponder, completed 16 of his 34 attempted passes for 190 yards. He threw one interception and received a quarterback rating of 52.3.
