A look at San Francisco 49ers' road towards success – NFL Special (Part II)
Continued from Part I...
At Washington
The 49ers did get a little slow in terms of scoring points, but they made sure that they restricted the opponents from scoring less than them.
While playing against the Redskins, the 49ers scored two field goals and a touchdown to get an early lead.
They extended the lead by scoring two more field goals later in the game and allowed only 11 points.
Against New York Giants
An interesting encounter was on the cards when the Giants visited the 49ers, but the excitement lasted only until the third quarter by the time both teams were separated by a one-point difference.
However, the 49ers scored two touchdowns while allowing only one in the final quarter and continued their winning run.
Against Arizona Cardinals
The 49ers extended their winning streak to eight after beating Arizona Cardinals.
The 49ers scored three field goals and two touchdowns in the first three quarters while the Cardinals searched for their first scoring drive.
The Cardinals did manage a touchdown in the final quarter, but it came too little and too late.
At Baltimore
As Jim Harbaugh prepared his side to play against the Ravens, his biggest fear was the opponents' coach, John Harbaugh, who happens to be Jim’s brother.
The Ravens finally ended 49ers’ long winning streak by scoring three field goals and a touchdown.
On the other hand, the 49ers could only manage to score two field goals as they got their second defeat of the season.
Against St. Louis Rams
The 49ers knew that they were up against the side that has disappointed everyone in the season.
Coming after a loss, the 49ers vented their frustration out on the miserable Rams who spent a scoreless game.
The 49ers scored four field goals and two touchdowns to score 26 points and once again start a winning run.
At Arizona
The Cardinals took their revenge by beating the touring 49ers in week 14 of the regular season.
For the 49ers, the disappointing factor, which was overlooked before due to the victories in the previous game, became dominant after the loss.
Their inability to reach the opponent’s end zone and extra reliance on field goals rather than touchdowns led them to a defeat against the Cardinals.
The 49ers made five scoring moves, which were more than the Cardinals, but still fell behind.
Against Pittsburgh Steelers
After being defeated by the Cardinals, many were wondering if it was the end of the 49ers’ lucky run, but they silenced their critics by dominating Pittsburgh Steelers.
The 49ers again scored field goals, but they were supported by the same number of touchdowns as their defense overpowered the Steelers’ offense, which could only score three points in the game.
At Seattle
Considering the recent ups and downs the 49ers were facing, many predictions were made about the 49ers when they travelled to play the Seahawks.
The 49ers did face some trouble and had to once again rely on the field goals, but their upbeat defense came at their rescue, restricting Seahawks from scoring more points.
In that game, however, Seahawks’ Marshawn Lynch became the first person in the season to score a rushing touchdown against the 49ers.
No other rusher could penetrate the 49ers’ defense earlier. This goes to show how strong they are defensively.
At St. Louis
The 49ers had already qualified for the playoffs, but a victory was needed to enter the postseason as a second seeded team and earn a first-week bye and a home-field advantage.
Their defense gave away more points than usual, but the improving offensive line successfully managed to score four touchdowns, outclassing the Rams.
After winning 13 games in the season, Jim Harbaugh has proved that he is the best man the 49ers have got in the last decade.
It is yet to be seen how they face New Orleans Saints in their playoff game, but there is no denying the fact that the Saints’ offense will have to work hard to beat the 49ers' defense.
