A look at Uncharted 3’s multiplayer features – PlayStation 3
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was one of the best games in history, as it went on to win several ‘Game of the Year’ awards including claiming more awards than any other game at the Game Developer Conference.
That leaves a great deal of expectations and pressure on the shoulder of the game’s developer, Naughty Dog as they look to launch the third title in the series.
Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception looks solid on the single player front, yet it seems that the developers are giving an extra amount of attention to its multiplayer component this time around as well.
In a post on the PlayStation blog, the hard working men and women at Naughty Dog shared a plethora of details on the game, each more impressive than the previous. What was amazing was the ambition behind the project with so many new features being incorporated
into the game.
Firstly, it turns out that the developers were using Uncharted 2’s The Lab to help with designing the multiplayer for the third game as Justin Richmond, the Game Director went on to explain, “We’ve been running The Lab sessions for Uncharted 3 and we used
that feedback to help design UNCHARTED 3.”
While this is nothing new, it does make a person feel more involved in the development process and seeing one’s feedback making a difference actually goes a long way in both empowering the player as well as helping the developer cater to the gamers’ needs
better. In essence it is a win-win situation.
The game will also boast split-screen multiplayer support with each user able to use a separate PlayStation Network account. This takes the game one step above Call of Duty: Black Ops which allowed two players to play online using the same console but only
one of them could log in to their account while the other remained a guest.
“We committed to using 3D early on, and we wanted to do it as real as possible because it allowed for split-screen. 3D and split-screen are
kind of the same thing because the game is basically rendering each frame twice. As soon as we figured out how to do that with 3D, we knew we could handle split-screen.”
It seems that Naughty Dog still were still not satisfied and felt more needed to be done in order to take Uncharted 3 to the levels they wanted. The maps in Uncharted 3 will include a dynamic event that will alter the map in one way or the other.
This is also something unique to the UC series and has been something fans loved in the previous title, and Naughty Dog have apparently taken it to the next level.
What Uncharted 2: Among Thieves lacked in its multiplayer however, was depth. Once the player had reached the highest rank and unlocked the limited boosters available there really was not much to keep them playing.
Naughty Dog have taken this into consideration and have added a in-depth player and weapon customization system. According to the game’s developer, they have added a host of customizable parts to the weapons in the game, as well as ways players can make
their in-game characters more unique.
The new features are sure to excite Uncharted fans and one can be sure to expect more details when E3 kicks off in about a week’s time.
