A look at the 20 top players in the world of Golf today: David Toms
David Wayne Toms a professional golfer was born on 4th January 1967 in Monroe Louisiana America.  Toms was into sports from an early age, he played junior league baseball, but golf fascinated him the most, and quickly became very good at it.
He won the 15-17 Boys’ event at the 1984 Junior World Golf Championships.  After finishing his High School in Bossier City, Louisiana he attended Louisiana State University and became a member of their golf team.
In the year 1991 Toms finished tied 23rd at the PGA Tour qualifying school to earn his first tour card, and made his professional debut in the 1992 season. Toms did not have a big impact at the start of his career to suggest his true potential,
but he kept on learning and improving his game to professional standards.
In 1995 Toms played the entire season on the Nike Tour and was rewarded for his hard work by winning two tournaments, the Greater Greenville Classic and the Wichita Open. The result earned him PGA Tour card for the 1996 season.
In the year 1997, Toms won his first PGA Tour event at the Quad City Classic, by defeating Brandel Chmablee by only three strokes. His good form continued going into the 1998 season by finishing runner up at the Tucson Chrysler Classic and finished his first
major tied at sixth at the Masters.
Toms had a good 1998 season but his best season was yet to come, in 1999 he had seven Top 10 finishes at the PGA Tour, he won his second PGA Tour event at the Sprint International, by three strokes from David Duval. Toms form was at an all time high and
he almost won another title at Reno-Tahoe Open finished tied 2nd behind Notah Begay III.
However Toms was not going to let his form go to waste and won his third PGA Tour title at the Buick Challenge defeating Stuart Appleby. The results meant that Toms earned around 2 million dollars during the season.
In 2000, Toms made his last year success follow him into the following year and in the 2000 season he finished tied at 4th in The Open Championship, and won his fourth PGA Tour title. He also won the Michelob Championship the same year.
Toms was truly becoming the player worthy of the potential he possessed, and in the year 2001 he had nine Top-10 finishes including his first major championship the PGA Championship. He also won the Compaq Classic of New Orleans, beating Phil Mickelson who
is arguably the best short game player in the history of golf. Toms went on to win his seventh PGA Tour title and successfully defended his Michelob Championship.
From the year 2002 to 2006 Toms had relatively moderate season and got injured in the 2008 season which hampered his play. He made his comeback from the injuries in 2009 with some success but without any wins.
Toms finally recorded a win after a 5 year drought in 2011 at the Crowne Plaza Invitational by one shot over Charlie Wi. The win guaranteed a place in the US Open and moved him to 28th in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
At age 44 Toms is coming back into form and peaking at the right time to move up the ranks at a time when there is no clear leader of the rankings, after the Tiger Woods debacle. Let us home that Toms can make the best of the opportunity.
