A look at the 20 top players in the world of Golf today: Nick Watney
Nick Alan Watney born to parents Debbie and Brent Watney, on April 25th 1981 is an American professional golfer. Watney from his High School days was into sports especially golf. He was in his school’s golf team at Davis Senior High School, in
Davis California. When he moved to college he went under the wing of his uncle Mike Watney at the California state University, where he was three time All American golfer.
At age 30 Watney has achieved what a lot of other golfers aspire for, he has won various titles and majors, but all was not easy for Watney, he had to work really hard, and saw some tough times in his career, where he was not able to perform the way he felt
he had the potential to, but mental toughness and hard work gave Watney the push to move forward and become one the best players in modern golf.
After some impressive performances at the amateur level, Watney decided to go professional in 2003 and in the same year recorded his first professional victory at the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial on the Canadian Tour.
It was a great start to his career, but Watney lost his form and the following few years were a bit slow and he was not able to record any wins but he kept on working and improving on his game, The years matured Watney as a player and a person and gave him
a better understanding of how players at the professional level competed.
Watney’s hard work paid dividends in 2007 when he won his first PGA Tour title at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, but again this was a solitary win for the season and his second win did not come until he beat John Rollins in the Buick Invitational in
2009.
Watney followed up his good form in the previous year into 2010 season and at the PGA Championship he had a lead going into the final round but shot a poor final round of 81 and dropped to a tie for the 18th place.
Watney recorded the biggest win of his career in 2011 when he won the World Golf Championship at the WGC-Cadillac Championship. The win showed Watney’s true class which seemed to be there all along but never came on display, and always coming close to its
potential but never getting there, but Watney had faith in his game and kept on pushing himself. The win moved Watney to number 15 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
The same year at the At&t National Watney played some exceptional golf and won by beating K. J. Choi by two strokes. This was Watney’s fourth PGA Tour title and it moved him into the Top 10 ranking in OWGR, the highest he had ever achieved. Watney finally
is showing his true talent and is a potential contender for the top rank in the OWGR.
Since the downfall of Tiger Woods, the US has not had many players in the Top ranks in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) to cheer for, Nick Watney can definitely be the one, he plays his game straight no on course ego and no off course controversies,
no golf boy band hysteria, just a plain professionalism personified which concurs with the classic persona of golfers.
