A look at the 2011 Formula 1 drivers’ standings after the Italian Grand Prix
After an exhilarating and heart-pounding Italian Grand Prix at Monza, it seems that the drivers’ standings has headed towards the exact same direction it has been heading towards since the beginning of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Red Bull Racing team as dominant as always, led the race quite comfortably and controlled the race throughout the 53 laps at Monza with the help of Sebastian Vettel who has almost wrapped up the championship for the 2011 Formula 1 season.
He is now 112 points ahead of his new closest rival Fernando Alonso. Mark Webber retired out of the race as a result of which Alonso is now in 2nd place in the constructors’ standings with 172 points while Sebastian Vettel is leading
the championship with 284 points.
Webber is now in 4th place behind Jenson Button. Despite the fact that both of them have the same amount of points, Button is in 3rd place since he has secured 2 race victories while Webber has secured
none.
Both of them have secured 167 points and now disappointingly enough, Lewis Hamilton is in 5th place which means that he is the least points scoring top running driver of the sport. He has secured 158 points in the drivers’ standings
and does not have anything to worry about anymore since Felipe Massa is way behind in 6th place.
Massa had an extremely disappointing race as he finished in 6th place behind Michael Schumacher and has not been able to secure a single podium this year. As a result, his chances of staying at Ferrari are getting quite low as
well despite the fact that the team has announced that they want to keep the Brazilian at least until the end of the 2012 Formula 1 season.
It would not be a very good move though as the team is struggling in the constructors’ standings because of him alone since Alonso is performing at his best alongside the top running drivers of the sport.
Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg are now closer than ever as they are in 8th and 7th places with 52 and 56 points respectively.
Schumacher had an outstanding race without a shadow of doubt as he finished in 5th place and secured 10 useful points for his team while Rosberg had to retire due to an accident caused by Tonio Liuzzi.
Lotus Renault GP on the other hand are struggling to perform as Vitaly Petrov is now in 9th place in the drivers’ standings and it seems that the team might not be able to catch up with Mercedes GP anytime soon.
Besides that, Kamui Kobayashi and Adrian Sutil are in 11th and 12th places respectively and they are looking pretty good. One has to admit that if they are given a good car in the next couple of years,
they have the capability of defeating even the best of drivers in the sport.
With just 6 races remaining in the remainder of the 2011 Formula 1 season, it seems that catching up with Sebastian Vettel is now completely impossible for the top running drivers. Even if they pull of some sort of a miracle in the remaining races of the
season, they will still not be able to take the lead in the drivers’ standings.
