A look at the Greyhound Derby in the last hundred years (1970-1979)-part5
John Silver won the 1970 Greyhound Derby beating the runner up a small margin of one length. He crossed the finish line in 29.01 seconds. This Greyhound Derby was also held at the White City.
The following year Dolores Rocket won the Greyhound Derby defeating runner up Supreme Fun by half a length in 1971. He had a lazy start but surprised everybody at the last end when he overtook Supreme Fun swiftly, winning prize money worth ten thousand pounds.
The following year Patricias Hope won the Greyhound Derby winning by a huge margin three and a quarter of a length in 28.55 seconds. The runner up Ballylander did not have substantial odds in his favour to begin with and his sloppy performance was the cherry
on cake on the finals.
Patricias was became Greyhound Derby champion for the second time by winning the 1973 Greyhound Derby. This was Patricias Hope’s victory second time in a row. He finished the race in 28.68 seconds defeating the runner up by a margin of half a length.
In 1974, greyhound Jimsun won the Greyhound Derby y defeating the runner up by a margin of one and a quarter of a length. He finished the race in 28.76 seconds. His victory was something of a surprise as the odds were in favour of the runner up
Myross Again.
The year 1975 brought victory for the greyhound Tartan Khan in the Greyhound Derby final. Tartan Khan beat the runner up Sallys Cobbler by a margin of one and three quarters of a length. He crossed the finish line in 29.57 seconds by taking lead of the race
at the last bend.
Greyhound Mutts Silver emerged victorious in the final of the Greyhound Derby of 1976. He crossed the finish line in 29.38 seconds defeating the runner up Ballybeg Prim by a difference of 2 and a quarter lengths. Ballybeg Prim was a talented greyhound with
4/5 odds in his favour, however it seems lady luck wanted to favour Mutts Silver that day.
In 1977, Balliniska Band won the Greyhound Derby defeating runner up El cavalier by a difference of two and a half lengths. He finished the race in 29.16 seconds with ease as he had the lead of the race from the start.
The second last Greyhound Derby of the 70s decade brought victory for the greyhound Lacca Champion. Lacca champion had 6/4 odds in his favour that night. The greyhound beat the runner up by a difference of one and three quarters of a length in 29.42 seconds
which was not much of a surprise considering the number of wagers placed on him for the Greyhound Derby final.
Sarahs Bunny won the 1979 Greyhound Derby held at White City. He beat the runner up Lacca Champion by a difference of one and three quarters of a length, crossing the finish line in 29. 53 seconds. The Greyhound Derby winner that year was sired by the 1974
Greyhound Derby winner Jimsun.
