A look at the Nashua Masters 2010
The Nashua Masters started on the 4th November 2010 at Wild Coast Sun Country Club, which is situated in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Warren Abery won the title by carding one-under-par in the final round.
The tournament started in pleasant weather conditions, but rain hit the course in few hours time making the situation considerably difficult for the entire field. After a delay of two hours, the field of 68 resumed the tournament carrying a purse of $7 million. Despite the wet greens, two players separated the crowd and took the lead by carding eight birdies each. Branden Grace and Alan Michell stepped into the second round as early leaders. They were chased by Alex Haindl and Jake Roos, who carded 64 each.
The second round of Nashua Masters proceeded in wet conditions without any improvement in the weather. The early leaders remained vaulted in lead, while, rest of the field failed to remain in the realms of par. Alan Michell and Brandon Grace recorded a score of 11-under-par to take the place as the clubhouse leaders. The lowest score of the day was recorded by a rookie, Jake Redman. The South African matched his best round scores on the Sunshine Tour and drafted a round of seven-under to take a share in the fifth place.
The field of 68 faced the worst conditions in the third round, when rain brought the tournament to halt. The match resumed after fifty minutes, but by then enough damage had been caused. Most of the field was standing on the brink of over-par with two to three bogeys on average. Warren Abery posted the course lowest against all odds and surged into lead, crossing all the existing leaders. The player drew three birdies, one eagle and two bogeys to fall into contention to acclaim, “I love playing the Nashua events and I feel like my game's getting better every day, every hole, I feel like my swing's getting better; I'm getting more confidence - everything's looking good."
As the tournament proceeded towards the final hours, Branden Grace took the second place, whereas, Allan Michell and David Hewan seized the third place after carding a nine-under-par. Jake Roos carded two-under-68 to take the fourth spot of the leader board.
Commenting on his game Roos said, “I’m pleased with my round. I just want to be in a position to challenge down the stretch tomorrow. I'm going to have a real go at it."
The final was crucial of all. Similar weather conditions persisted throughout the morning making teeing difficult for the field. However, the match was bought to a halt; and when the tournament resumed, strong winds took the charge of the course. Fighting the winds, Warren Abery picked up two birdies against no loss and surged to the top of the leader board.
He earned a three strokes edge on Alex Haindl, Branden Grace and Oliver Bekker. The trio shot 11-under-par to take the second place. Alex Haindl earned the lowest score of the day. He picked up five birdies and successfully reached the other end of the course without a blemish. He wrapped the round with a score of 5-under-par.
Alan Michell seized the fifth place by carding a 70. He seemed determined to win the title, but the weather did not turn out to be in his favour. The player missed the fairways, but managed to remain in par.
The second round leader was thrown at the 34th spot of the leader board. Jake Redman failed to match his momentum and pace; hence, surrendered with the score of 74.
These were the highlights of the Nashua Masters, which was staged at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Warren Abery won the title on Sunday by smashing 13-under-par, carrying purse of R1.2-million.
