A look at the Wentworth Golf Course ahead of BMW PGA Championship – Part 1
European Tour’s BMW PGA Championship is about to hit the Wentworth Golf Course on May 26th with a star-stellar field. The par-72 layout is situated in Surrey, England and it is recognised as one of the finest courses in Britain.
Here is a look at the course layout.
Hole #1
The front nine of the course opens with a par-5 hole, which stretches on 473 yards. The journey from the tee box to the green is a straight path, which has two fairway bunkers and a hazard on the foot of the green. The strategy to reach the green in two
shots is by hitting a driver on the tee and making sure it lands between the two fairway bunkers and directing it to the right side of the green with the help of a short iron or a fairway wood. The green is apparently free from all sorts of threats, but the
wind swirling in the trees on the back of the green can make putting difficult.
Hole #2
The second hole of the front is a par-3 layout, which is stretched on 154 yards. The tee box is located at a level slightly above the bunkered green that makes it easy to channelize the shot. However, the huge oak tree at the backdrop might cause rift in
the magnitude of the wind and hence would affect the landing area of the tee shot. To tackle the problem, carry several clubs to the green.
Hole #3
This par-4, 465 yards long hole is an easy birdie opportunity. Since the path from the tee to the green is an upward approach, therefore wind is a huge opponent in the way. Carry the tee shot towards the left side to avoid wedging from the fairway bunkers
on the right and aim the second shot towards the right side of the green, as it would help in targeting the pin easily, which is normally placed on the edge of the front-greenside bunker.
Hole #4
This par-5 lies on 498 yards. The fairway turns dogleg right, with trees on both the sides. The green is two-tiered and severely bunkered apart from sloping towards the left side. Use a hybrid on the tee and target the right side of the fairway, as it would
decrease the distance between the tee shot landing area and the green. Aim the second shot towards the end of the fairway, if the player holds an edge over short game, otherwise the green is accessible in two shots.
Hole #5
This is a par-3 hole, which stretches on 184 yards. The green is located at a higher altitude; hence, the green is not visible from the tee. The green is wide, but has wind blowing on it from right to left, making it difficult for putting.
