A look at the performance of John Isner in 2012 – Tennis Special
The tall American John Isner had a considerably good run in the 2012 season.
He has manifested remarkable tennis and has brought laurels to his homeland. In the past, the player showed a great performance in the fourth round of the Australian Open in 2010. He is known for his power high-paced serves, which completely ruins the opponent’s
confidence. Isner has not contested in the final round of any major ATP tournament but has sustained a decent rank.
In an interview recently, Isner told the media, “You know the ultimate goal is to be No. 1 in the world. But I tried to set goals that I can achieve realistically. My first goal this year was to get in the Top 10 and then finish Top 10. And I have a match-win
goal: I wanted to get 40 wins this year. And I believe I can win a Masters 1000 event and a Grand Slam.”
The 6 ft 9 in had the most successful tennis career in 2011. He was in the list of Top-20 players for the first time, after winning 36 matches. Alongside that, he was also the fifth player to receive a 1000 aces record. He started his serve in 2012 from
the Australian Open held at the hard courts of Melbourne; he made it until the third round. In the earlier rounds, the American gave a tough competition to his competitors David Nalbandian and Benjamin Mitchell.
The 27-year-old, Isner, made it to the quarter-finals of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships. The top seeded challenger battled until the quarter-finals of the Delray Beach International Tennis Championship, receiving a shocker at the hands of Kevin
Anderson.
The North Carolina native competed until the final round of the BNP Paribas Open held at the hard courts of Indian Wells. At the US Men’s Clay Court Championship at the clay courts of Houston, he faced a three set loss at the hands of the Argentinean challenger,
Juan Monaco in the final round.
The right-hander American struggled hard to uphold his game at the French Open held at the clay courts of Paris. In the second after a five set match, the local challenger, Paul-Henri Mathieu snatched the win from the American. He was the 11th seeded participant
at the Wimbledon Championships but faced a shocking crash at the hands of Alejandro Falla.
Ranked 14th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Isner, attained his final glory at the Campbell’s Tennis Championships he rallied past the Aussie, Lleyton Hewitt in final round in straight sets. His senior compatriot, Andy Roddick, gave
him a straight sets defeat, displaying his greater experience.
He faced a tough trail at the hands of the Swiss veteran, Roger Federer in the quarter-finals. Despite of his high graded performance, the former world number one was hard to take over. At the US Open Grand, Isner took maximum advantage of his home ground
and contested until the third round. However, it is interesting how he suffers a heavy loss at the hands of the lower ranked professional as the tournaments move towards the end.
Evaluating Isner’s all year round performance is similar to former tennis professional like Todd Martin. He surely has immense potential to secure a better rank, he needs to adopt a more serious and proactive game plan as the American tennis fans desperately
wait for a new hero.
