A look at the top prospects of Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League -NHL Special
Detroit Red Wings, which play in the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL), have been selecting players very low in the NHL drafts in recent years and it is not expected that a team would have strong prospects in such conditions.
But Detroit Red Wings is a team which has been able to produce high profile prospects even after selecting players late in the draft. They have always been able to produce players that carried them forward and it is a very interesting fact that Red Wings
have been able to make way into playoffs for last straight 21 seasons.
There are many examples of them producing some top class prospects and some of the names are listed below.
1.       Brendon Smith
Brendon Smith is a Canadian defenseman who played last season with Red Wings. He was drafted 27th overall in the first round of the 2007 NHL draft but played college hockey for 2 years after that and then few years of hockey in American Hockey
League (AHL).
The 23-year-old from Mimico, Ontario is a high scoring defenseman as he scored 22 goals, 44 assists, 66 total points in 120 AHL games for Grand Rapids Griffins and 26 goals, 61 assists, 87 total points in 95 games for University of Wisconsin.
Jim Nill, the assistant general manager and Vice-President of Detroit Red Wings told NHL.com,
"He's ready. He was pretty close to being ready last year, but we don't want kids sitting up in the press box. We think it's better for them to play in the American League. If they don't make your top four lines or top six on defense, it's better off they
play in the American League. He played some games and played well, but he's definitely ready now”.
2. Tomas Jurco
Tomas Jurco is a Slovakian forward who was selected 35th overall in the 2011 NHL draft by Red Wings and signed his entry-level three–year contract with them last week on 7th of August.
The 19-year-old who can play as both left winger and right winger, currently plays for Saint John Sea Dogs in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) has scored at more than one point per game.
3. Ryan Sproul
Selected 55th overall in the second round of the 2011 NHL draft, Ryan Sproul is one of the best upcoming defenseman of Red Wings. Last year he had a great season in Ontario Hockey League (OHL) where he scored 23 goals, 31 assists, 54 total points
in 61 games for Salt Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
Nill also had things to say about him as he said,
"He has a real good shot, puts up good points, and he works. He's big, rangy and he can skate and shoot a puck."
4. Calle Jarnkrok
Calle Jarnkrok is a Swedish forward who was picked 51st overall in the 2010 NHL draft. He has been playing Swedish Elite League since he started his hockey career he might be playing in NHL very soon.
The 20-year-old played Sweden in 2012 World Championships and showed an impressive performance by scoring one assist and had many shots goal in 8 games they he played in.
