A look at who is favourite to win American League Central title – MLB Update
The competition for the American League Central Division title is going to be fierce this season. It seems the top three on the standings table are going to battle it out for the title. With an impressive 47-38 record, the White Sox have given impressive
results in the last three months.
Not many expected them to finish first before the All Star Break and credit should be given to them for showing strong determination, courage and desire to win.
Chicago, who won their last Central Division title in 2008, will next face the struggling Kansas City Royals. It will be interesting to see if Robin Ventura and company can sweep the Royals to stretch their lead over the second placed Cleveland Indians.
Indians have also done extremely well with the limited resources they have. Right now, they are 45-41, two games behind the leaders. Indians’ last AL Central triumph came in 2007 and they have struggled to live up to their fans’ expectations this season.
Manny Acta and his men have an excellent opportunity to give their fans something to cheer about but consistency is going to be the key for them.
Third placed Detroit Tigers have been the biggest disappointment in AL Central this year. After General Manager Dave Dombrowski signed Prince Fielder for $214 million contract, there were talks about how easily the Tigers will dominate their Division but
that has not turned out be the case so far.
With their five game winning streak, the Tigers just managed to end the first half on a positive note but the real challenges lie ahead in the second half.
Right now, Jim Leyland and company are two games behind the first placed Chicago White Sox. The gap between the two teams may not be that big but the Tigers will have to keep working hard to have any chance of making it to the post season.
The likes of Justin Verlander, Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez led the Tigers to their maiden AL Central title in 2011. These guys will be looking to continue their good work in next series against the Baltimore Orioles to give their side some much needed
momentum.
