Question:

A lot of dental work?

I went to the dentist this morning for the first time in over 3 years. The reason it had been so long is financial and insurance problems. So now after 3 years of no check-ups, almost never flossing, brushing once a day at the most, drinking coffee and soda and eating candy; I need a lot of work done. One thing my dentist wants to do is a root canal. That's the only thing I haven't had done before so that's what I'm worried about. Do root canals hurt? And what are risks of getting them as well as like side effects? Any information of tips or anything is much appreciated.

  2. 1) Yes, root canals hurt but not as much as NOT having a root canal done and letting the tooth get worse. The dentist will numb the area and you will not feel any pain during the actual procedure but the tooth will be sore for up to a couple of days afterward.

    2) "More than 70-90 percent of root canal treatments are successful. However, sometimes a case needs to be redone due to diseased canal offshoots that went undetected, some of the inert filling does not completely seal off the roots from bacteria, the tooth is damaged during the procedure (perforation), or the tooth fractures between or within the roots, or the fracturing of a canal filing instrument used-both of which rarely occur. Occasionally,  root canal therapy will fail altogether because re-treatment range of 60% to 65% successful. A root canal is more likely to fail if a permanent filling or crown is not placed to protect the tooth.  A root canal can fail within days, weeks, months or even many years after the procedure has been completed and will be marked by a return of pain."

    3) Take care of your teeth so you don't need to go through this again. ;)
