We round-up the review scores for the Resident Evil offshoot and find that the game is one you will either end up loving or hating, but will enjoy with friends.
Capcom’s Resident Evil series is one of the longest running in the video game industry and has over a dozen titles on offer already. Making its debut on the PlayStation One all those years ago, the Resident Evil franchise, along with the Silent Hill games,
became the ‘poster game’ of the survival-horror genre.
Resident Evil: Nemesis was an instant classic as it had a tyrant stalking and chasing the player throughout the story and ended with one of the most memorable boss fights of its time. A few years later Resident Evil 4 was released on the PlayStation 2 and
is widely regarded as the best game on that console.
In fact, the HD remake of the game remains one of the most downloaded titles on the PlayStation 3 console as well.
There have been a number of offshoots of the series as well, adding back-stories and enriching the universe. The latest of which was Resident Evil: Revelations on the Nintendo 3DS.
However, since Resident Evil 5 Capcom seems to have made it their mission to make redefine their genre as they went from survival-horror to action-horror.
The furthest the studio has gone away from the core series is their latest entry, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, which is nothing like any game in the series.
In fact, it’s a third-person action shooter with a co-op feature that has very little in common with any other Resident Evil game. The developers, Slant Six, are known for their work on the SOCOM games and according to IGN.com “Raccoon City is little more
than a poor man’s SOCOM, and a destitute man’s Resident Evil.”
The website gave Operation Raccoon City a rather painful 4 out of 10 and it was not alone in that regard as both Eurogamer and Videogamer slapped the same score on to the game.
The former stated that the game “delivers the bare minimum in every category and stops right there.” At the same time the latter did not hold back either as they stated, “Surely nobody out there is demanding a creaky Left 4 Dead rip-off set in a cardboard-box
recreation of the Resident Evil universe, but that hasn’t stopped Capcom from diluting and cheapening its strongest brand.”
At the same a number of critics and review sites did have praise for Operation Raccoon City as well. Destructoid gave the game the highest rating out of all the review sites and wrote, “as a challenging rollercoaster ride through an iconic fictional catastrophe,
Raccoon City provides ours of violent fun interspersed with some exasperated cries of aggravation.”
