Does magic jack phone usb thingy actually work? Is it good? Would it be worth it?

I have it and love it!!

but, remember..... your computer has to be on all the time!!

and there are a lot of tricks you gotta learn to make it work just right!!

its cheap.....but I would not wanted as my primary phone service!

I use it to call back to the US while traveling...........!

You need a computer and a high speed internet connection like Cable or DSL (which I have)

VERY easy to install.....you will be up and running within 5 minutes...!

I have the MagicJack for a month and love it!!

People either hate or love a product.

I love my MagicJack!

I use it with the combination of GrandCentral so I can use different area-codes!!

They call it the vonage and skype killer!!!

tip: after installation don't run it on the admin account...create another account for the MJ!!

Also, kinda watch and close out the device manager...but you will all learn that in good time on your own!!.

From what I hear, some people love it; some people hate it.

In reality, that is the case for most VoIP services.... they usually work good for you, or you are plagued with technical problems.  Most problems people have with VoIP is equipment configuration related issues.  So, in one sense, it is kind of luck of the draw as to what works and what doesn't. (depends on every individuals equipment used and set-up).

MJ is still in beta dev phase,  and customer service has a lot to be desired.... from what I hear.

But, for $40 to get started, MJ may be worth a try...

Have you also tried:

Skype, Gizmo5, or Efonica?

And, currently "EarthCaller" is completely free to use with your web browser and a headset...

BE AWARE OF THIS COMPANY !

I cannot speak for everyone but my experience is awful.  There are a lot of problems: cutting out, statics, problem receiving and making calls out(not all the time though).  I contacted their tech support numerous times to resolve these problems to no avail.  When I finally tried to return it, they wouldn't take it back saying "it's their policy that I have the original packaging"  which I don't have any more.  

I also have skype and skype is a way better than magic jack.  If I were you, I would save the original packaging in case it doesn't work out for you.  Good luck !

I'm always amazed how fast ppl blame the technology

for their own laziness to adapt or learn to surf a manufactuers website...

many posters here are just too d**n lazy to own a pc...

its not a toaster, you may actually have to think how to use something..

yes MajicJack is advertised to work out of the box..

but when things burp... read

maybe just maybe its YOUR microsoftcrap

or your non-high speed internet access...

magicJack uses ports UDP 5061, TCP 80 and TCP 443

Does magicJack work behind a firewall or NAT?

Yes it does.

You should make sure that your software firewall allows magicJack to make outbound connections. Check the documentation provided by the vendor on how to do this.
