Question:

A male bunny problem/concern

My bunny will be three years old in September and today I noticed something that freaked me out; near his s*x organ, on each side, there is a gland and the area was covered with some kind of black substance that scared me; for a moment I thought he had worms. I called the vet and he said it's coming from the glands there. Ok, why doesn't any book/article on rabbits mention this? If you have a male bunny, do you see a little black area where these glands are? it looks like something black is under the skin. by the way, i then bathed him but it was real weird and scary. any thoughts; thanx a lot ps) I never neutered him.

  1. I have raised rabbits for 5 years, and had some weird things happen, however nothing quite like you described. If you are really that worried about the rabbit than take him to a vet. Although, I'm pretty sure the rabbit will be just fine. He's getting older.

  2. Bucks all have a scent gland located near the testes.  This gland can emit a pretty foul smelling musk if your rabbit is nervous or excited.

I'm kinda puzzled by the black stuff, though - now that he's bathed, I'm assuming it's gone?  Maybe he had some f***s caked there, or he might have a minor infection or blockage in the glands?

Check the area daily for the next week to see if it reoccurs.  A dose of terrimyacin in his water might help, but if it continues, a trip to the vet may be necessary.

  3. He simply needs his scent glands cleaned. this is normal in both buck and doe rabbits. Nothing to be alarmed about.

Just take a cotton ball and warm water and clean them out.
