A sum of money is to be divided in the persons, X,Y AND Z in the ratio 10:7:5. If Y gets 14$ more than Z, what is the share of X and what is the total sum of money???

I know how to solve these ratio questions but i'm stuck on this one. Can anybody help please?

  1. So we have these two equations:

    x/10 = y/7 = z/5

    y = z+14

    Combining:

    z/5 = (z+14)/7

    z/5 = z/7 + 2

    z/5-z/7 = 2

    2z/35=2

    z=35

    They want x, so:

    x/10=z/5

    x/10=35/5=7

    x=70

    If we find y, we get the total:

    y/7=z/5

    y/7=35/5=7

    y=49

    So x=70, y=49, z=35

    The total is $154

  2. y is 7

    z is 5

    the difference is 2

    therefore $14 = 2

    thus 1 = $7

    then, 10 x 7 = $70

    7 x 7 = $49

    and 5 x 7 = $35

    oh and total = $154

  3. X = $70

    Y= $49

    Z= $35

    Total will be $154

  4. X:Y:Z is 10:7:5   Y gets $14 more than Z, so we have X:Z+14:Z

    So we can put that as a two ratios equalling each other 7/5 = (z+14)/z

    Cross multiply  7z=5z+70  Solve for Z  35  Y is 49, solve for X

    10/7 = x/49

    Solve for X  X = 70

    For those of you giving me thumbs down, I sort of figured the person answering the question could add up X, Y, and Z to find the total sum...
