Question:

A measurement activity?

I'm looking for a measurement activity that is related to squirrels.

I've already considered measuring items with nuts. Are there any other tried and true ideas out there? I thought of measuring squirrel tails with acorns but I can't find a pattern that would work and I'm not a drawer. :-) Thanks!

  1. What do you think of measuring with squirrel tracks?

Here's a link help you with the 'tracks' part :

  2. I'm sure there is aclipart picture of an acorn.  Have the kids measure themselves.

  3. First, be careful with nuts - I don't know what the allergy situation is where you are teaching, but in this day and age, many, many children have sever allergies to nuts, so check that out first.

Next, I love the idea of measuring with acorns!  If you go to google images and type in acorn, I'm sure you'll be able to find an image that you can print on cardstock and laminate for multiple times of use, or find an image that kids could color and just print it on paper.

Along that same line, you could find a full image of a squirrel and use that.  We measure in "footprints" as a lead in to using standard units of measurements, but why couldn't you measure in "squirrels" it would be cute!  Find a squirrel pattern (either using google images again, or check out enchanted learning.com) and see if you can find a good image.  Then kids can measure the table to see how many squirrels tall it is, how many squirrels long the room is, etc.

    Have fun and good luck!
