A method of preparing the soil and sowing the Lucerne

Do I correctly assume that you mean lucern clover?

If so, one uses an inoculant on the seed to produce nitrogen fertilizer, and plant it with a nurse crop like oats, barley, or wheat.

The soil needs to be free of long term soil puddling, and moderately well drained. But the use of a grain nurse crop does suggest use of soil preparation consistent with the grain crop.

Use of a goodly application of  manure is important, but when one is using a grain cover crop the grain should not be over-fertilized lest the grain will be so heavy as to break the stems.
