A miserable problem hits the Wankhede stadium of Mumbai which may bring the loss of up to Rs 285 crore – Cricket News Update
The renovation of Wankhede stadium, Mumbai for the World Cup 2011 was worth Rs 285, which is about to go to drain. The drainage line running below the stadium is about to collapse and to reconstruct it; major part of the stadium will have to be excavated.
Wankhede stadium got the honour of being the venue for the World Cup 2011 final between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758. This is where the Indian team lived its dream of becoming the World Champions after 28 years. Huge sums of money were invested to prepare this ground
for the big event but now it seems that everything will have to be undone.
During the renovation, no one noticed that the drainage system located beneath the stadium had gone very old and may collapse because of the heavy downpours in the approaching monsoon season.
As Mumbai is experiencing heavy showers this monsoon, the drains may collapse, flooding the entire city therefore need immediate maintenance.
The present lines directing flood waters from the entire city to the sea were constructed in British rule. They are made up of bricks and do not have any manholes.
The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 Municipal Corporation blamed the stadium management and said that their suggestions were ignored by these people who preferred completing the task in time over reconstructing the huge drainage lines.
Civic body said that as they had intimated the management before, hence they are not responsible for damage. The cost of constructing the lines and bringing the stadium back in to its current state will be upon the stadium management.
The renovation of the Wankhede stadium was proposed in 2008 when South-Asian countries were named to be the hosts for the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 World Cup 2011. The stadium management knew that they have a massive reconstruction plan but did not care to begin in time.
When the big event had almost approached, MCA started the construction work but ignored the suggestions from Municipal committee. They were bound by time and had to prepare the stadium for the World cup.
This negligence has cost them may be the entire amount invested and all the effort, time and money will go to waste. To reconstruct the drains, most of the stadium has to be dug up as the line lies exactly beneath Wankhede. It is estimate that drain reconstruction
project will take almost 2-3 months alone and then MCA will redo the stadium.
There is currently no other solution to this problem and the management will have to bare the entire cost.
