It's been done - it's a play called "West Side Story"

Very famous, and it was a modern version of Romeo and Juliet.

If you really never heard of it:  "West Side Story" is Romeo and Juliet set in two youth gangs.  It's set in 1960 New York City.  Very clean cut and non-violent for today, though.  And not a black gang.

Yes, people would watch it. R and J has been re-written in many settings over the years.  And this has probably been done already, I'm just out of touch.Wait, isn't there a movie "Romeo Must Die"?
