A nail biting encounter between Derbyshire and Lancashire ended in a tie
A thrilling encounter of the Friends Life Twenty20 between Derbyshire and Lancashire ended in a tie, at the County Ground, Derby in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Thursday, June 2nd, 2011. Both teams batted brilliantly and scored 190 runs each in their allotted 20
overs. Derbyshire’s opener, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wes-Durston-c2789, was the top scorer of the match, scoring 86 runs. The game was completely dominated by the batsmen and the bowlers from each side failed to make an impression.
Lancashire’s captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Glen-Chapple-c60141, decided to field first after winning the toss. The conditions were extremely good for batting and a high scoring game was expected. This is exactly what happened, as the hosts piled up a solid total in their innings.
Durston opened the innings along with New Zealand’s, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-Guptill-c1980, and the pair gave a blistering start to the hosts. They put together 52 runs for the opening wicket before the latter was dismissed after adding 21 runs to the total.
Guptill had been struggling to covert his starts into big ones for his national side and continued the trend, getting out in the twenties. However, the fall of the Kiwi player didn’t trouble the Derbyshire team, as Durston and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chesney-Hughes-c1233 collected 103
runs for the second wicket partnership.
Hughes was in blazing form, scoring 65 runs off just 32 deliveries. He smashed the bowlers to all parts of the park, hitting five fours and four monstrous sixes. He was unfortunate to be run-out in the 17th over of the innings. The way he was
batting, could have easily taken the home team’s total beyond 200.
However, Durston played until the end, scoring 86 runs from just 58 balls with the help of eight fours and two thunderous sixes. His innings came to an end in the last over of the innings.
Tom Smith picked up a couple of wickets for his team, but gave away plenty of runs in his spell.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Smith-c90598 departed for 33 off 23 balls.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Moore-c77694 continued his brilliant innings and ended up with 72 runs from just 55 balls with the help of eight fours and two towering sixes. He got out in the 16th over of the innings, but laid a solid platform for the lower-order batsmen.
The visitors needed just seven runs off the last over, but a terrific last over from Tim Groenwald saved the match for Derbyshire. He picked up two wickets for just six runs, ending the match in a tie.
