A name of a movie/cartoon?

I am currently looking for an animated feature which deals with a boy who gets appendicitis on Halloween and he leads his friends on a journey throughout the world.....at some point they eat candy skulls in Mexico..and then he gets recovered. Its like he has an out of body experience. It has been a while since I have seen it.

their friend's life is hanging between life and death. So they travel the world and go to notre dame, mexico, etc. with this wierd dude who shows them the meaning/origin of halloween. In the end they save his life.
