How about Mt. St Helens for recent.

The asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs for distant past.

When the moon split off from the earth for way distant past.

  3. The storm of 1978.Small in comparison to some disasters, but New England had 36" of snow in 3 days, and 20 people died stuck in their cars on the highway.Hundreds of homes on the seashore were reduced to matchsticks. It's the biggest natural disaster I lived through. It was a full moon that day,and the ocean had a flood tide,so conditions were perfect for  alot of shore damage.Everything closed for 7 days.Only emergendcy vehicles were allowed to be on the roads.Convenience stores were charging $3.00 for a loaf of bread, which is like paying $30.00 for one today. The drifts were so high on my house, that it covered all the windows completely.Everyone got around on snow mobiles, skis, snow shoes, and sleds. If you google it you can see photos.
