A new director to look after Simon Fraser University’s Athletics Department
Previously, Director for Athletics Department at the Kansas State, Milt Richards, who had also held the prestigious position of Director Athletics at the Division II California State University (CSU) Stanislaus for about 12 years, will officially be announced
to take charge of the Simon Fraser University (SFU) this week.
The 53-year-old veteran, Richards, belongs to Liverpool, N.Y. The ambitious guy, who expressed his thoughts about his recent duties via telephone, said that the Canadian culture had offered him abundant learning experience.
Before becoming a part of the CSU Stanislaus, Richards worked as Director Athletics for the State University of New York, as the school was moved towards obtaining National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I from Division III.
Milt Richards, the new director athletics for the Simon Fraser University, said that the school that was going to acquire a full scale membership for the NCAA Division II by next year was a sleeping giant that could annihilate its rivals once its latent
talent came alive.
However, he was more than happy over making history. Expressing his content with the recent job, the experienced director also admitted that he had been promised a tough job.
He said, “There’s a lot of work to do and I have to learn Canada, but having said that, when I was 32 and left Temple University to go to Kansas, well that was a whole different world I wasn’t quite aware of. But we’re ready for the next chapter”.
Adding to his thoughts, he referred to the major milestone that needs to be achieved, culminating in earning a full membership of NCAA for the school.
He said, “The opportunity to be involved with the first international school to become a full member of the NCAA, that’s exciting. I really believe SFU can be Grand Valley State”.
Richards had been alerted about the opening at the Simon Fraser University by James Blake, the former basketball coach who had himself abandoned by California State University (CSU) last season.
Dwelling upon his significant experience, Richards referred to himself as a person who had the capability to turn around athletics, as someone who had concrete plans of introducing positive changes to the athletics squad of the young athletes he was going
to take charge of.
