A new elite eight emerges
The Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions has invited eight special women to come and battle for the last tournament of the season on the WTA circuit. In order to qualify for this event, athletes must be one of the top international tournament
winners. Also, for this year they have allowed two wildcard spots to be filled for those players not invited to the WTA Championship currently being held in Doha, Qatar.
"With the field featuring some of the sport's leading players and next generation stars, a great week of tennis and fierce competition is guaranteed," says Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the WTA Stacey Allaster.
The athletes who will be taking part in the event are:
Li Na of China qualified by winning the 2010 AEGON Classic and is ranked 11th in the world;
Aravane Rezaï of France qualified by winning the 2010 Swedish Open and is ranked 18th;
Anastasia Pavelyuchenkova of Russia qualified by winning both of the 2010 Monterrey Open and the 2010 Istanbul Open and is ranked 20th;
Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium qualified by winning the 2010 ASB Classic and is ranked 22nd;
Ana Ivanović of Serbia qualified by winning the 2010 Generali Ladies Linz and is ranked 24th;
Alisa Kleybanova of Russia qualified by winning both of the 2010 Malaysian Open and the 2010 Hansol Korea Open and is ranked 27th.
The last two athletes to take part in this event will be the wildcard births of
Daniela Hantuchová who is ranked 31st in the world and
Kimiko Date Krumm of Japan who is the lowest ranked of all participants at 53rd.
The favourite going into the tournament will be Li Na who has had her best season to date, reaching the rank of no. 9 during the month of August.
The tournament will run on a single elimination format and will begin November 4 in Bali, Indonesia, with the athletes vying for a big piece of the $600,000 prize money.
