A new fish appeared in my pond and I asked?

Question

2 months ago what it was. Was told it was a goldfish. I have a massive pond with big goldfish in it. This new fish is almost metallic black and gold. It has never changed colour and is about 6 inches long now. How can I tell the diff between Koi and goldfish? Will it x breed if a Koi? Should I buy another koi for company? Help please I love my fish and am willing to learn. They come on my hand they are so tame.

matallic black and gold actually sounds like a carp to me as i have 2 of these in my pond you tell the difference between goldfish to koi

more wonderful colourings in the koi`s also in a pond the koi`s tend to lye under bubbles or a filter if you have 1,koi`s are much larger than goldfish also koi`s are always on the move in a pond where as goldfish tends to stay still for periods of time hope this helps u out

Koi and carp have "whiskers" barbels is the easiest way to tell if it is one of these (or catfish, stergeon, goatfish etc)  GOldfish donot have barbels.  This fish could have come in as fertilized eggs from a bird that had visited a local pond or lake.  This happens.  If it is a carp, yes it can breed with a koi.  Snails and other fish can appear as well (if they aren't eaten).

If you have the room and want to get a koi, go for it.

You really need to post a picture. koi's have a different shape to gold fish. the pectoral fins are wider and more wing like.  The shape of the bodies are more circlar.

Some Gold fish have black backs and sometimes they loose the colour as they get older as it is for camoflarge when they are yonger.

Koi's have what look like feelers eaither side of their mouths and Gold fish do not.

I don't think eaither have shool tendencies so the two will be fine to gether with out the needing more company.

I don't think they will breed.

Koi have large thick long bodies. They also have little whisker like things on the sides of there mouth.

you say it appeared?sounds like someone has dumped it in your pond! koi have little whiskers round the mouth,goldfish tend to be longer bodied when youg and change colour with age.as far as  am aware koi carp dont.if you already have other fish,you dont need to get more stock.
