A new job looking after children?

Question

I have a new temporory job for the week as I am on my summer break from uni. My job is working in a creche looking after young children. I think most of the activities for the day will already be organised by the staff already working there but do you have any fun activity ideas inwhich I could suggest if the children are getting bored with what ever it is we are doing? I want to do well in this job and make a good effort with the kids. But my lack of experience is making me worry abit

Salt dough.  Equal amounts of salt and water to double flour.  makes a play dough you can eat.  Not tasty, but safe.  You bake it and it goes hard.  Then you have another activity of painting it

Read to the kids, and play with them.  If you build in the blocks with them, dig in the sand, play  house, and run around and play tag with them, and read them stories, there's no way they'll get bored.  They'll love you to pieces and so will the teacher!

Since it sounds like the kids will be having structured learning/class times through out the day, when its your turn to handle them, make it as fun as possible! Integrate the day's lessons into fun games and crafts, and if all else fails, turn to the staples: Duck, duck goose, tag, Simon says, coloring/drawing, etc. Also: Kids LOVE to talk about themselves; hold "cirlce discussions" where you ask each kid a question and let them talk about it for 1-2 minutes (Make sure each child has a turn, don't let one steal the show!) Questions to ask: Do you have any brothers or sisters? (Names, ages, what you do together, etc), What is your favorite...?(food, game, color, toy, school subject, pet...), What do you like about school? How old are you; when is your birthday?

Anything which is arty farty and involves safe scissors, pva glue, paint etc.  Dough craft is a really good idea but I don't know if the salt thing would be a problem - you just know that half of the darlings will probably eat it and develop an allergy or something - peg dolls are a favourite in my house and I have five children in my home at any given time!

Don't just decorate the face and hair - get really creative and use feathers as flaboyant dresses, pipe cleaners for arms, etc.

My mother always said though that never work with children or animals!  (I would say that any job where you are at the beck and call of the general public is cr@p - and I just won't do it).

Depends on age: games like catch, mess about football, musical chairs etc are great and easy to organise.

Crafts: String painting (dip string in paint, place on paper, fold paper and pull string out, reopen paper and yu get cool paints! Playdough! Glue, paper and random sticky things!

Look about on the web-search up things like www.under5s.co.uk, crayola etc for ideas! OR cbeebies etc. Or try your local library for activity books!

Just keep the activities simple and age approptriate. Something simple like using water and new paintbrushes to pretend painting the sidewalk. You can spread out a long sheet of paper and let the kids all join in to create a masterpiece.
