A nice town/attraction to visit between Rome and Pisa?

we are travelling to Rome and flying out of Pisa, it's a late flight and on our way to go see the leaning tower we would like to stop somewhere worthwhile... we're travelling by train

The obvious answer would be Florence, as it is the main city in Tuscany and hosts many historic attractions and famous museums (including the Uffizi)...but if you are looking for something different I recommend a trip to Siena and its suburbs...the countryside is breathtaking and there are a lot of beautiful,little,cosy towns sitting nicely up the mountains...Chianciano,Montepulciano,Abb... san Salvatore,Sarteano,etc...

Wherever you decide to go, however, do not forget to try out the local wine...sublime!

I went to a little town nearby Pisa called Lucca, which is described as a mini florence but much quieter.  There are some lovely buildings there and its surrounded by a fortress wall. They had some markets there for buying shoes etc.

I enjoyed it as a change of pace from some other places in Italy.

Its not that far from Pisa and easy acces by train

Sure Florence and Siena. I was born in Rome and I live near Florence so I know all these cities and I do think that Florence and Siena are beautiful.

I would suggest a wonderful little town on the coast south of Rome called Sperlonga.

You can get there by taking regional trains stopping in the station Fondi-Sperlonga. Enjoy!

Florence. Beautiful ! I just returned today from there and Siena. The latter is quite interesting and very old, but the locals keep strange trading hours? Considering how vital tourism is in Siena so many places close at odd times. Also it can be quite noisy in the centre at night with many young people seemingly at a loss as to how to occupy there spare time. The narrow quaint old streets are spoiled somewhat with d**n lazy motorists pushing their way through !

It is better reached by bus (Siena Rapida) from Florence costing  ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚‚¬ 6.50 and taking around an hour & 20 minutes.

I agree with Richard and Sienna.  But the Cathedral in Florence must warrant your attention.

Wow! It's my favorite part of the world. Siena is where everyone goes, bit there are plently fo pretty places in the area.  Avoid Milan, which is a dump despite the Sforza palace, but not really on your route.

San Gimignano - a bit smaller than others suggested (which are all fantastic, by the way), but fascinating.

To be honest, if you steer clear of Livorno, which doesn't have much to recommend it, you won't go wrong. Just enjoy the life.

Florence is definitely one of the most beautiful cities in Italy if not in the world. If you're travelling by train it is perfect for you because you can reach it from Rome in a couple of hours and then take a train directly to Pisa airport - it takes about 45/50 minutes from Firenze Santa Maria Novella.

I absolutely agree - Lucca is charming and can get busy at very touristy times, but is not as well known as Siena (still very lovely) and Florence. You can walk all round the main centre on the wall surrounding the town/city and it is very friendly and quaint. Otherwise Florence is a dead cert - wonderful and soooo beautiful. I personally wouldn't bother with Pisa - it smells, is just the main sites and lots of beggars and sellers and little else. It also seems to be in a very plain rundown suburban area. Sorry!
