A nocturnal ball python?

I recently got my ball python a week ago, and he seems to be adapting fine to his new home. However I noticed one thing, he seems to be more active during they day, and rests during the night. Aren't ball python's nocturnal? During the day he likes by his water bowl on the cool side, or climbs his branch and basks under his head lamp. [He lays by his water bowl more than anything, though.] And during the night he curls up in his hide [on the hot side] and won't come out until morning.

Maybe is his heat lamp too hot for him [I turn is off during the night], and he only goes to his hot side during the night because it's not as hot?

Or is my ball python simply un-nocturnal?

  1. He might be confused.I tend to see mine more during the day. He is always moving around. He out grew his hides and i need to buy him a new one. But right now... he is sitting inhis water dish. then he will be under the light., at night, he is curled under the light. I think he might be more active cause he is comfertable. Maybe he is just a day owl and likes to sleep at night!

either way, i would ask a vet about it. he might need an exam!

  2. It might be that it is too hot. My BP was very active too, did the same thing - curled around his water bowl or climbed on his log and it turned out the floor temp was too hot.  Do you have a hide on both sides?  I went over some basic husbandry (double checking temps with a probe and making sure I had identical hides on both sides) and he's settled in more normally.
