Question:

A notion on the female form - a p**n view?

when i was a little girl, muslim ladies never wore hajibs, etc, instead favouring clothes similar to their peers in the UK and Europe. Now, with the idea of 'arabness', do you think muslim women are being 'looked at 'wrong?

To cover a woman head to toe in order to protect modesty and claim rights over her body - is that not similar to viewing women in the p**n/lads mag way - in that a woman is a body - to be covered up or revealed at whim?

(by the way - i have no issues with p**n, just the way it can be viewed that all women look and act like that)

  1. Wow!!! Drawing a connection between modesty and pornography.  Wow!!  Can someone draw this one up into a logical proof for me?  I'm fascinated!

  2. well, the most important difference is that one is the result of free will while the other is forced upon women by societal norms

so to me, there is a serious issue if muslim girls/ladies are not PERMITTED to wear whatever casual dress they want under threat of prosecution, threats, etc...

at least with p**n, it's entirely up to the woman. it's not forced upon her like the islamic dress codes are in certain countries.

  3. Unless you're 600 years old, Muslim women did wear hijabs when you were a little girl.

The point of covering up is so that they won't be looked at at all except for by their husbands.

  4. I don't think the idea that female body = s*x is limited to our culture. Anyway, according to Islam men's bodies should be covered too, right?

I read a great dissertation about these subjects: Diasporic Narratives of sexuality: Identity Formation among Iranian- Swedish Women by Fataneh Farahani. Recommended. *g*

  5. Assuming that choice is given to all women, I can see your view.  Modesty can be as shocking as p**n.  Sometimes, modesty is even more shocking as p**n.  I see nothing wrong with covering up for modesty, whether it is a cultural or religious reason, as long as it's the woman's choice.

  6. I think the men make them wear it to keep the women feeling guilty.  They blame the women for making them "sin".  To look at a woman and find her attractive is to sin.  Lets just cover her up, let's blame the women for our lack of self control.
