  1. NO you are okay with just Birth Certifcate and Drivers license when crossing by train.  You dont need a passport yet to go back and forth (only by air right now).

Mid next year (2009) you'll need a passport to get back in to the US whether by air, land, rail or bus.

    for sure.

  2. No passport is needed yet for American nationals or permanent residents of USA if travelling by LAND (that means car, bus, train, or walk) to Canada.

You would need to show proof of citizenship or government-issued ID, ideally with photo. When I was going across last fall, I gave my driver's license and birth certificate as my documents.

You WILL need a valid passport, NEXUS card, or equivalent document accepted as part of the WHTI agreement starting as of June 2009 for ALL forms of travel. You presently only need a passport if you are travelling by AIR on any international flight. This is a requirement since September 2008.

  3. nope. proof of citizenship and government issued photo id is all you need travelling by land . By AIR is the only time you currently need a passport.  In June 2009 you will ened a passport for all travel.

  4. Yes.  I'm not sure that the Canadians are stopping anyone from coming into their Country however, I do know that in order to return, you must prove citizenship and, the US. is currently keeping track of people crossing both the Canadian and Mexican borders.
