I rented a house and the deal was paint the inside. The existing walls are a purplish creation that only a horror show could produce.I used to think I had a head on my shoulders, not.

Is there any trick to keep my poor walls from bleeding to death?.I have 3 coats of primer on them and they are still laughing at me.

Thank You

  1. It depends greatly upon what was painted on the walls to start with. Some products are extremely hard to cover. If it was not something like a permanent marker, then you should be able to cover it with a shallac based primer. I believe Bin is one, but if not any paint store should be able to suggest one.

  2. Yeah I would agree that you need a much better primer.  Someone rented a room off me a few years back and they puked up on the wall after a night of drinking.  Instead of telling me that they couldn't wash it off, they painted the whole of one wall (over the puke leaving a slightly embossed raised area) in a deep deep blue (which, incidently, didn't completely cover the puke colour either).  You should be glad your's is just purple heeheh! However my painter friend used a good primer but had to paint all four walls and the ceiling (which was also splashed with 'night on the town orange').

Hmmm get a really good primer, my friend did the job for £80 so the expensive primer must have been worth the extra cash.

    Best of luck!

  4. I think whats happening is that your landlord has bought some really cheap primer/paint. It shouldn't take 4 to 5 coats of white paint to cover a darker color. If your running low on paint and they need to do a paint run to the store. Then suggest a better quality paint for the finish coat. Its not in their or your best interest to spend more time than you have to painting walls. More messing around with painting means more chances of something going wrong. (-:

  5. The primer should have covered it all in one pass. Since it didn't it may be you are trying to cover a high gloss or exterior paint with interior primer.

To go forward buy Kilz Oil Based, not latex, primer. It stinks to heck and takes over night to dry but it will cover anything including icky purple.

  6. We sometimes have decent luck using an oil base or shallac primer first coat and latex the second and third coat

Purples, reds and black are the toughest to cover

The oil seems to seal the bleading and the latex covers the color
