Question:

A pair of birds have nearly finished a nest on my front porch. What should I do?

I removed one yesterday that they had just started on. I spent a great deal of time outside yesterday. The pair of birds squawked and cried but wouldn't come back to the porch while I was out there. That's my main concern -- that they will abandon the nest due to the human traffic on the porch.

This second nest is nearly finished. Should I just go ahead and remove it?

In general, have birds already mated by the time they start building a nest?

If so, what kind of time constraints is the mama bird under after mating before she must lay eggs? If I destroy this nest, will they have time to make another?

  1. Get rid of the nest, they will build another somewhere else.

  2. just let it be. it's the course ofnature. do u think u can wait a lil while 4 the eggs to hatch, grow, and then fly away? after that, u can remove it. hey, if a human is pregnant, but is homeless, can they make the baby wait for them to have a home 1st? i don't think so.

  3. Just let them build the nest, if the area were too busy for them, they wouldn't be building a nest there.

I have two Robins in my garden, I watched them build a nest in my window box under the kitchen window. They laid the eggs as soon as the nest was built and now have four chicks in it. The Robins are not afraid of me and will sit at my side as I am weeding and sat in the garden, one even looks into the kitchen through the window.

It would be best to just let them get on with their nest building as it will be time for the eggs to be laid.

  4. It seems like most everyone that answers are at their parents house and they are telling their parents to just leave the nest alone. It is easy to let the birds make a big mess that has to be cleaned up  when they leave. It is easier to tear up their nest. There are plenty of trees.

  5. no dont destroy the nest they will come back to the nest as long as you dont touch it or put your sent on it! it would be kinder to the birds just to leave the nest alone.

  6. The birds are expending huge amounts of energy to build the nest. They are a mated pair, if they are building a nest. They will finish the nest, lay the eggs, hatch them, and fledge the babies in a few weeks. What's the harm in letting that happen? Birds are a tremendously important part of the eco-system. Let them do their thing. They will adapt to your traffic around the porch. Just leave them and the nest and the babies alone. They'll be gone in under a month.

  7. um...how about not being retarded and leave the nests alone

  8. Last year a mama bird made her nest on my porch, right under the step to the door. It was so cute. I told my daughter not to touch it but we were able to watch (and video) as the eggs hatched and then as the chicks slowly gained feathers and finally learn to fly. The mother flew away whenever we used that door but as soon as we were a safe distance she came back. Keep the nest there.

  9. The same thing happens at my house. For us it doesnt matter how many times we take it down, there will just be a new one the next morning. Ive just told my mom to leave it alone lol!

However you never really know when the bird is going to lay its eggs. I would recommend just leaving the nest alone. Wait for the eggs to hatch-- and wait for the nest to be empty, then you can remove it : )

    Hope I helped.

    Good Luck hon!

  10. Just leave the nest alone. It took time to build it and they like it there. JUST LEAVE IT ALONE!
