Question:

A pair of male parrotlets? Do they get along?

I want to get a cagemate for a one year old male parrotlet. I`ve heard that males are more likely to bond with younger females, but I am not sure I want to get a female due to hormonal breeding issues and egg difficulties. I`m leaning more toward another male, and hope that after a proper introduction and getting to know each other they can live in the same cage. Does anyone have experience with this?

  1. maybe

  2. Parrotlets should be kept singly.  Only a breeding pair should be kept together.  These are pretty aggessive little parrots!

  3. Hello.

As long as there is no female in the cage , your 2 males parrotlets will be fine . If there is one female and 2 males ...they will kill eachother to compete with her ...( any other kinds re_act like that too , even in human ...lol...sometimes . Aw ...sorry , just kidding ! ) I always put all of my babies parrotlets in one cage and there is no problem ...until they become breeding age , then I have to put one male & one female ( unrelated ) in  one cage . Otherwise they will bite each other till death. TM

  4. I breed pacific parrotlets as a hobby. Parrotlets are not like budgies, or any other species...so you can't go by advice from someone who is caging budgies together. Parrotlets do not get along with the same s*x in a cage together once they have sexually matured (which is around 12 months). This is for a majority of them. Parrotlets are very aggressive toward other birds...sometimes even their mates. They are extremley territorial over their turfs. The only time I have heard of same sexs being housed together is when someone has them in a big aviary, and their is both male and females. Then they tend to pair off and leave each other alone. Sometimes if you raise young birds together you can house them together even if they are same s*x or different species, but this is only sometimes. Your parrotlet is old enough that he is used to being alone- and has established his cage as his own turf, throwing another p'let in there with him could end up in blood shed. I have lot's of parrotlets, and they are so territorial that I have to put up dividers between their cages so that they can't see each other. When I take the dividers down to clean, they go nuts. Your best bet would be to buy another small cage and put it near your male's with his new friend in that. They can see each other and talk to each other, but won't be able to harm each other. And don't put the cages near enough that they can touch...I made the mistake of shoving one of our cages to far over and two parrotlets were having it out between the bars. One male bit another's toe and it bled horribly.

  5. Well i have 2males and 2females. The two males get along pretty fine. It depends if the bird you have or about to get is greedy. So im guessing if my 2male parakeets get along, your 2 parrotlets will too. Not all males get along. They all have they're own personalities. Hope that helped.
