  1. Oops! I misread the problem and somehow gave it a 50% first discount. It is now corrected:

    ( ( ( ( $50 *.90 ) * .85 ) * 1.08)

    Explanation:

    To get the price after 10% off, multiply by what you have to pay, 90% or .90.

    To get the additional 15% price after all those, multiply by what you have to pay, which is 85% or .85.

    To get the 8% tax in there, multiply by 1 + the tax or 1.08.

    10% off $50 is like 90% "on", so you multiply $50*.90=$45.

    15% off $45 is $6.75, and you can 45-6.75 OR just take 85% of $45=$38.25.

    To add tax, you can multiply .08 x 38.25 and add it to $38.25 or just multiply 38.25 x 1.08 = $41.31.

    Contrary to what some answers are before me, there is only one answer. Also, anyone who combined the 'percentages off' together is wrong, you can't just add them up as as they compound. If you don't know how to compound them do them one at a time.

    If you want take 10% off any price and then take 15%, you have to look at it as paying 90% and then 85%. You take 90% of 85% (.90 * .85) which leaves you paying 76.5% or .765 of the price.

    To add in the tax, take 90% of 85% of 1.08% (.90 * .85 * 1.08) has you paying 82.62% or .8262 of the original price.  $50 * .8262 = $41.31.

  2. Total 25% of -> $37.50

    Add 8% tax -> $37.50 + $0.03 = $37.53

  3. $41.31

  4. There are two solutions depending on how you interpret the wording (are they an additional 15% off of $50 or 15% off of the first 10% markdown?).

    10% off $50 = $50 - (0.1*$50) = $45

    15% off $45 = $45 - (0.15*$45) = $38.25

    add 8% tax = $38.25 + (0.08 * $38.25) = $41.31 (answer 1)

    25% off $50 = $50 - (0.25*$50) = $37.50

    add 8% tax = $37.50 + (0.08*$37.50) = $40.50 (answer 2)

  5. 10%  +15%  =25% off

    25% (50)  =  $12.50    (discount)

    50 - 12.50 =   $37.50   (discounted price)

    8%  (37.50)  =  $3.00   (tax)

    $37.50  +  $3.00  =  $40.50

  6. 50 - 5 = 45

    45 - 7.75 = 38.25

    38.25 +3.06 = 41.31
