Planting a tree where there are already enough trees to use up all the available water will cause all of the  trees to be under stress, too little water to do their job of growing and absorbing carbon dioxide,giving us oxygen. But if there is a lot of water going to waste, then planting that same tree can do what trees should be doing, storing carbon dioxide as wood, for hundreds of years and of course giving us oxygen. The key is always having enough water to look after the tree, Little trees dotting a near desert accomplish nothing, not even preventing the desert from growing.
