I have a cockatiel. I have been told it is a pearl pide (or is it pied?) cockatiel. I have heard of pearl and pide/pied but not pearl pide/pied.

please explain the differences between both and explain the mix. is it rare, or was I just told wrong from the beginning?

  1. picola has the pictures to show you the difference between each. a pied will have like yellow/white body with big gray spot/spots. A pearl will have tiny yellow/white U shaped marking on a gray body. A pied pearl will have the big gray spot/spots plus the small yellow/white U markings. Pieds and Pearls are common, but pied pearl is not so much. Most breeders breed pearls with pearls or pieds with pieds and not pearls with pieds.

P.S i am know wondering because male pearls lose their pearls after the first molt if a male pied pearl will too. ummm........

"pearl" relates to the fish scaling type pattern on the birds feathers.

pied relates to the gene that takes away the main body colour and therefore creates patches of yellow or white

so your pearl pied, has the fish scaling pattern aswell as patches of yellow/white (depending on the strength of the gene these could outweigh the normal grey colouring of the tiel)

so yes they exist. even "cinnamon pearl pied" tiels exist.

    hope this explanation helps

  3. Yes, they do exist.
