A perfect ending for Novak Djokovic – Tennis Special
Serbian number one, Novak Djokovic, swayed from his path after the first hard court season. However, he not only sought his rhythm but also capped the season by grabbing the title at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, a season-ending tournament taking place
in London, England.
After failing to grab any title in the clay and grass season, Djokovic fell at number two in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings. However, when the indoor hard court season started, the Serb found his momentum
and captured the Rogers Cup, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event taking place in Toronto, Canada.
He maintained his intensity and secured a final berth at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati (lost to Switzerland’s Roger Federer).
In the following week at the US Open, last of the four Grand Slam events taking place in New York City, Djokovic displayed spectacular skills to cruise into the semis without losing a set. In the final four against David Ferrer, the Serb lost the opening
set but remained focused to set up a date with the British number one, Andy Murray. He bowed out to the Olympic gold medallist in a five-set nail-biter but gained confidence boost.
Djokovic then went berserk at the China Open and after crushing the French number one, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in straight sets, he grabbed his fourth year-to-date title.
The 25-year-old carried his rhythm at the Shanghai Rolex Masters, a Masters 1000 event held in Shanghai, and breezed past his opponents in straight sets to lock horns with Murray in the final showdown. He overpowered the Scot native in a three-set thriller
and lifted his fifth year-to-date title.
The Serbian star exited to America’s Sam Querrey in his opening match at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris. However, with withdrawal of Federer from this event, Djokovic reclaimed the top spot at the ATP World Tour Rankings.
In the circuit-finale in London the following week, Djokovic played his best tennis. He conquered his entire opponents in round robin, including the US Open champion Murray.
Djokovic then avenged his Olympic loss against Juan Martin Del Potro in the semi-finals before encountering the 17-time Grand Slam champion, Federer, in the title-round. The Serb showed flawless performance in it and despite trailing in the start of both
sets, he managed to formulate a 7-6(6), 7-5 victory against Federer.
The jubilant Djokovic stated in a courtside interview after capping the circuit with the ATP World Tour Finals title:
“It's very satisfying for my team and myself to conclude this fantastic season with a [Barclays ATP] World Tour Finals win. I never got to the finals of this tournament in London. The furthest I got is semi-finals a couple years ago where I lost straight
sets to Roger. I wasn't really feeling this surface very well in past couple of years. But this year has been different. I wanted really to fight and I really wanted to get as far as I can in this tournament. Winning all the matches I played makes it even
more special.”
The Belgrade native is now enjoying a well deserve holiday and is looking forward to carry his momentum for the upcoming season.
