Question:

A philosphical question about "anti-matter".

I am going to try and make this as short as possible.

I have been having this brain aching thought "could what constructs the universe construct our universe?"

In other words could our anti-human (the anti-matter of human reality) actually be our mental/imagination/thought image of the world we all perceive?

Or was the "anti-matter" therory thrown out?

  1. From what I know of anti-matter is that it destroys/cancels out matter.  So anti-matter cannot be used to construct anything.

  2. Anti-matter is actually a lot like matter, only the atomic particles have opposite charges from what we're used to (ie positrons orbit the nuclei of anti-matter).  Other than that oddity, there's really nothing terrible different about it.  Since it is hard to create and contain things like anti-hydrogen, it is very difficult to study its properties, but I suspect anti-hydrogen behaves a lot like hydrogen in a vacuum.

Anti-matter really doesn't exist in our galaxy, except perhaps at the early stages where it was eventually annihilated through collisions with matter.  Since I'm not sure how a scientist would determine if distant mass is anti-matter or matter (assuming anti-hydrogen behaves identically to hydrogen with respect to EM-force, gravity, etc), it is possible that there are entire galaxies made of anti-matter in our universe.  That would explain where all the anti-matter went after the big bang!

Another fun thought experiment with anti-matter is to think about creating vast quantities of it and moving it into a black hole...you could reduce the mass of the black hole and allow some of the light at the event horizon to escape...wouldn't it be fascinating to get a look at all the light trapped over the course of a few million years as you released more and more light from the black hole?

  4. I thought the answer was 42.
