This is, I guess, a dirge I wrote a few years ago for a mentor who had died. Please feel free to be critical.

"Of Natural Causes"

The greenest grass shall cover him

Upon a hillock crowned by stone.

The keenest light shall falter when

The eye that sees it sees alone.

I knew his kind, melodic brogue,

I knew his wild and frothy beard,

Yet he who tried to teach this rogue

Lad shall ever remain unheard.

How such a solid, laughing man

Can stumble so in daily mirth,

Now silenced in his rictus grin

By mouth and sockets filled with earth

Does signal how early we’re shorn

From Nature’s womb though we decry it.

And they who laugh and they who mourn

Harp alone on Earth so quiet.

  1. It's always interesting to be able to read unique poetry such as this and try to interpret what people are saying. I loved it. It gave a vivid view of one mans death as a result of natural causes. People look at natural less deeply as they will other causes, but this puts a different angle on it.

    Thanks!
