Is it totally hopeless? Do I need a new television or can whatever blew up be fixed? It smells burnt.

  1. Find out the details of the power surge !! the electric supply company is usually liable if the  surge was caused by one of their high voltage lines falling down on to the lines carrying domestic supplies to houses !!! Check with your neighbours ! did any others sustain damage ?

  2. hopefully this is a small inexpensive tv, because hes right! your tv ruined, theres nothing you can do except throw it out and buy a new one. this time spend the money on a surge protector. also buy a nice one. you can excpect to pay $40-$60. thats the price range you should start off in. dont but a cheap $10 one. ask for help at best buy or wherever you go. explain the tv your buying and theyll point you towards one thats appropriate for the tv.

  3. I was going to answer by telling you to unplug your set for about 20 to 30 seconds and then plug it back in.. Until I read the part where you say it smells burnt. It just may have fried it. Sorry

You should always use a surge protector for you expensive electronics. It pays off in the end. believe me.
