A quadruple bogey spoils Rory McIlroy’s start at the Memorial Tournament
The world number two Rory McIlroy carded a one-under par 71 in the opening round of the Memorial Tournament at the Muirfield Village Golf Club to share the 20th spot on Thursday, May 31, 2012.
McIlroy started off on the back nine of the course and went four-over through the first three holes, as he suffered a woeful quadruple bogey on the par-three 12th hole.
“It wasn't the start that I wanted to get off to, being 4-over through three holes, especially after the last few weeks. I was just like, here we go again,” said McIlroy, who missed the cut in each of the last two tournaments he played.
It was a huge disappointment for his fans, who were expecting him to make a good start this time, especially at a time he desperately needs to get back to form to make preparations for the upcoming US Open.
Therefore, McIlroy tried to control his nerves and recorded two consecutive birdies on the 14th and 15th holes. That was the time when he was getting some momentum and a bogey on the 17th spoiled his score once again.
Yet, he continued to play well and was rewarded in the end, as he signed a four-under on the front nine of the course that allowed him to break the par on the opening day.
“I hung in there well, and proud of myself for the way I just fought back. To finish the round under par I thought was a really good effort,” he said. “I just tried to stay patient and not even think about the score, just think about what I'm working on
in my swing and try and make good swings. That's really all I could do out there”.
McIlroy is currently looking to get his form back, as he only has two tournaments left in his schedule prior to the start of the US Open, scheduled to start two weeks from now.
Therefore, he needs to focus a little more in the upcoming rounds in order to place his name at a better place this time.
He is currently standing five strokes behind the leader Scott Stallings who fired a six-under par 66.
