A question about Batman The Dark Knight?

What happens to the joker at the end of the film. Batman and the Joker are fighting in this building near a ledge then all of a sudden we dont see the joker or it doesnt say what has happened to him?

the police come and get him i guess because he is left hanging from the building fire escape

Well I saw this about 6 weeks ago so this is stretching my memory a fair bit, but I think that Batman left the Joker hanging from the ledge from the wire he used to catch him when the Joker had been falling, and the cops found him hanging there and arrested him and took him in to the station.

the joker almost falls off, then batman saves him and leaves him there, then i guess he goes to jail
