I have these baby carrots that expired July 31st but they have not even been open. Are they still ruined?

  1. No they will not be ruined if they have been handled correctly.

Frozen if they frozen, stored in the tin and not punctured.

  2. Usually, the date on packaging is when they shouldn't be sold after, not when they shouldn't be eaten after. 2 weeks could be iffy though. Baby carrots are cheap. I'd toss them out for safety's sake.

  3. Your answer:

Us Yahoo! Answers people can't tell if it is good for you or not.  July 31st was a long time ago.  You have to use your sense to judge for yourself.  (By now, I figured you are an intelligent girl!! lol)   If it looks, feels, smells, and tastes ok.  It's good!

    But:

    Depends on:

    1.  Temperature of the fridge

*Food needing refrigeration should be kept below 41 degrees.

(What I would do:  I would use my sense, if something isn't right, I'd throw it out and buy a new one.  Get the fresh taste and stay on the safe side.  I have work and the boss wouldn't want me getting paid to use the restroom!  And if you have kids, don't take the risk!)

Oxygen causes bacteria to grow.  So if there was air in the bag, it's a good chance there are some bacteria growing on it.

Also, I forgot, but are the carrots inside wet?  Hydrated?  If you combine: oxygen and water..... what do you get?

Again, small amount of Microbes (bacteria, fungi) can do nothing to the body, while a large amount could cost you lots of toilet paper.

**The actual term "Expiration Date" refers to the last date a food should be eaten or used. Last means last -- *proceed at your own risk*

That person that answered first was talking about the "Sell by" date.  Which explains below

    1.  "Sell by" date. The labeling "sell by" tells the store how long to display the product for sale. You should buy the product before the date expires. This is basically a guide for the retailer, so the store knows when to pull the item. This is not mandatory, so reach in back and get the freshest.

  4. ~Susakin... :D

Look at them, smell them, taste them.

Do they taste ok? then they probably are ok

Sell by dates are guesswork designed to make it easy for supermarket drones to ensure they sell the old stuff before the fresh stuff. They are not written in stone and are no substitute for common sense.

  5. They are totally fine and still will be for a while.  I work at a surplus store and we sell a few things that are past their dates, almost everything is good for a while past the dates and canned food is good for a long time.: )

  6. Since this question is under vegetarian I would suggest to dump them unless you plan on cooking them thoroughly.
