In Chinua Achebe's short story "Why the Tortoise's Shell Is Not Smooth," the Tortoise uses his cunning and deceit to trick his bird friends. However, BEFORE tricking his friends, he announces, "I AM A CHANGED MAN. I HAVE LEARNED THAT A MAN WHO MAKES TROUBLE FOR OTHERS IS ALSO MAKING IT FOR HIMSELF."

Is this an example of hypocrisy? If not, what is it an example of?

  1. It could be classified as hypocrisy. But it seems more like just simple trickery...

A more prominent example of hypocrisy might be if the tortoise went around telling someone that they shouldn't trick or deceive or cause trouble for anyone, but then he goes around doing just that himself.
