  1. Heather-

Its called the locomotive.  In the days of yesteryear, one locomotive was normally used to pull trains, (Steam Locomotives).  In those days each crew had to syncronize their actions with the other crew in the other locomotive, called Double Heading.

Today multiple locomotive are used to pull trains of varying sizes.  There is only a need for one crew because the locomotive are connected via a device called an MU Cable, (Multi-Unit Cable).

This connects the computer systems in each locomotive to the lead locomotive, syncronizing their power to act as one unit.

I know in earlier model diesels they connected them in a similar fashion, but the person to better answer how they did that would be Skidderback, as he was a Southern Pacific Engineer.

I hope that answers your question.

  2. "cab" is the word you're looking for, but they're not just in locomotives.  They are also in coaches used in push/pull service, or electric "MU" coaches which have no locomotive.

  3. Answer is one that is :- The Engine Cab.

  4. The Locomotive

  5. The engine.

  6. bell housing? good luck

  7. It is called the cab. Also known as the 'footplate' from steam days when the engine cab had a steel plate floor.

  8. like the other answers, engine, locomotive, cab.......best of luck to you.

  9. The cab And Tekkaman it was the same MU cable system as we use today

  10. The cab

  11. The big noisy thing that pulls trains is the locomotive, the part of the locomotive where the engineer sits is the throne room, or some call it the locomotive cab.

We engineers dont really have to navigate, there is plenty to do but "navigating" is regualted by a dispatcher that tells which trains to stop and let other more important trains go by.

The very little room in the nose compartment of a locomotive is where the conductor frequently sits, it is also called a throne room.

Locomotive cab is the proper name, I was being smart.

  12. the entire unit is the locomotive.  the enclosed space where the engineer sits is called the cab.

the locomotive contains other objects besides the cab, such as engine compartments, fuse boxes, toilet, and other fun stuff.
